Can 18650 batteries replace No. 5 batteries?
18650 lithium batteries cannot be directly used as a substitute for battery 5. There are essential differences between the two in terms of volume, voltage, and safety, and forced replacement will lead to serious hidden dangers. It is necessary to strictly distinguish the usage scenarios.
Volume adaptation challenge: The size of the
18650 battery is 18mm in diameter and 65mm in length, which is 2.3 times the volume of the 5th battery. Forceful modification can easily cause poor contact, electrode misalignment, and even battery jamming due to thermal expansion and contraction. A user once had the positive and negative poles reversed due to battery compartment vibration, almost burning the device motherboard.
Voltage conflict risk: The 18650 has a nominal voltage of 3.6-3.7V and can reach 4.2V at full charge, far exceeding the 1.2-1.5V of the 5th battery. High voltage can directly penetrate the equipment circuit, causing faults such as motor burnout, capacitor bulging, and charging chip melting. Tests have shown that equipment PCB boards that misuse high-voltage batteries will show arc burn marks.
Potential safety hazards: 18650 batteries have high energy density but poor stability, and overcharging without protective circuits can easily lead to thermal runaway. Professional alternative conditions: If modification is required, four requirements must be met: installation of DCDC voltage reduction module (conversion efficiency ≥ 90%), customized 3D bracket to ensure contact pressure ≥ 0.5N, integration of UL 2580 standard BMS chip (overcurrent response<10ms), and strict temperature control (10-50 ℃).
Applicable scenario suggestion: It is only recommended to carry out circuit modification on high-power equipment such as electric tools and LED light strips. The cost of daily small household appliance modification is much higher than directly replacing the battery. A better solution is to choose a dedicated lithium battery pack or purchase compatible equipment.
